Traditional banks serve two masters. One is you, the customer, who they have to keep happy in order to have money to lend. The other is their owners, to whom they have to return a profit. The owners’ claim tends to take precedence: to maximize its profits, the bank will only do what it has to do to hold on to your money. So, they’re always trying to find the lowest interest rate you’ll take for your deposits, the highest rate you’ll pay for a loan, the highest fees they can charge you for giving you access to your money, and the minimum amount of service you’ll accept. They don’t do this because they’re evil. They do it because their job is to maximize their owners’ return on investment.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
